9 Fun Reasons to Add Stickers to Your Envelopes Before Mailing Them

I have written many thank you and other handwritten notes. A fun habit I learned from my Mom is putting a sticker onto an envelope.

My mom likes to put stickers on the envelopes, and now I like to do the same.

Stickers are not just for kids!

Reasons to Put Stickers On Envelopes

  1. It is fun.
  2. The plain white envelope is boring. Add some color to it with a beautiful sticker.
  3. They add some personality to the envelope.
  4. Enjoying stickers can help encourage you to make thank-you note writing a habit.
  5. The stickers may add a little joy to the recipient’s day. Choose a sticker you know they will like.
  6. Picking out stickers you like can bring you a little joy.
  7. The mail carrier may also enjoy them. Think about how much mail they handle each day!
  8. To convey the meaning of the card. For example, use a thank you sticker when mailing a thank you notecard. Use a Happy Birthday Sticker for birthday cards.
  9. To support artists that design stickers.

Stickers on Envelopes Examples

I love cats. The photo below is an actual envelope that my mom gave to me. The envelope was not mailed in this case, so only my name appears without my address.

My mom knows that I love cats. Her sticker choice made me smile as soon as I saw it. It added a few minutes of joy to my day.

My grandma also liked to use stickers when she was writing notes. She wrote handwritten notes until she turned 100.

She would often use bird or flower stickers. She didn’t like cats, so no cat stickers for her!

In this photo, the card was sent to me around Easter time, and she chose to use these lovely colored egg stickers. You’ll notice that the stickers are on the back of the envelope, which makes it unlikely that the stickers will interfere with the mail processing machines.

Stickers on Envelope Tips

You may be wondering if you can put stickers on envelopes that will be mailed. My family has added stickers to envelopes for more than fifty years.

The United States Post Office is okay with most colored envelopes (with a few guidelines), so stickers should be fine too!

Here are some tips to remember:

  • Use flat stickers. The stickers should not be puffy to avoid any risk of causing problems with the postal scanning machines.
  • Spacing. Make sure the stickers are not close to areas for the address and return address. I recommend putting the stickers on the back of the card.
  • Placement. Don’t put a sticker where the stamp goes.

A stamp is a sticker. So if your sticker is as thin as a stamp and placed on the back, it’s doubtful to cause problems at the Post Office.

Where to Find Stickers

Stickers can be found near the card section in most retail stores. Another place to look is stores selling scrapbooking supplies (such as Hobby Lobby). Dollar stores may also have stickers that you can get for a low cost. My mom likes to order sheets from Current Catalog.

Sites like Redbubble offer stickers made by artists (you can see my cat art shop here). You may be able to find a sticker that represents you or something you like a lot (ex., cats for me).

I encourage you to add some stickers and see what kind of response you receive.

Businesses should maintain a professional image and choose appropriate stickers. Plain “Thank You” stickers are likely safe and can be purchased in large rolls.

  1. So sweet! I love the kitty stickers, and I love that your grandma wrote notes. I treasure the letters I have from my grandparents. I completely forgot about “Current”! I’ll have to go check them out. Thanks!

I did a post on making stickers for envelopes, if you have any interest in seeing it. I linked to it in the “website” text box of this comment form.

  2. Yes, I have been a sticker girl for along time.
They a little class to mail that isn’t for business purposes.
Hobby Lobby also has lots of stickers. Good time to buy is when they are 40%off.
